Chandigarh Police Announces Comprehensive Republic Day Traffic and Security Measures
The Chandigarh Police has released an extensive traffic and security advisory for January 26, 2026, to ensure the seamless execution of Republic Day celebrations at the Parade Ground. This advisory outlines specific road closures, diversions, and entry protocols that will be enforced throughout the event.
Road Closures and Traffic Diversions Effective from Early Morning
According to the police notification, multiple roads surrounding the Parade Ground will be subject to closures or diversions starting at 6.30 am and continuing until the function concludes. Emergency vehicles are exempt from these restrictions to maintain essential services.
The following road segments will remain completely closed to general traffic:
- The stretch from the roundabout connecting sectors 16, 17, 22, and 23 to Gurdial Singh Petrol Pump on Udyog Path in Sector 22-A.
- The road from the Old District Courts in Sector 17 to Shivalik Hotel, located on the rear side of the Parade Ground.
Additionally, traffic will be diverted at several key points:
- From Lyon’s Restaurant light point near the Municipal Corporation office in Sector 17 towards the Parade Ground.
- From the Sector 22/23 light point to the roundabout of sectors 16, 17, 22, and 23.
- From the small chowk of sectors 16 and 23 to the same roundabout.
Parking Arrangements and Entry Protocols for Attendees
The police have established distinct parking and entry guidelines for different categories of attendees. General parking will not be permitted in front of shops in the Sector 22 A market from 6.30 am until the event ends.
Special invitees with authorized parking labels are advised to approach the Parade Ground via the Sector 16/17/22/23 roundabout (Cricket Stadium Chowk) on Udyog Path. They should park their vehicles in the designated area in front of the Sector 22 A market.
The general public has been directed to access the Parade Ground either from the ISBT Sector 17 Chowk or from the Sector 17/18 light point side. Public parking has been arranged at the following locations:
- Sector 22-B parking area
- Circus Ground in Sector 17
- Parking area adjacent to Neelam Cinema in Sector 17
- Multi-storey parking facility in Sector 17
Public Transport Adjustments and Dispersal Management
For public transportation, buses heading towards ISBT Sector 17 will be rerouted from Kisan Bhawan Chowk and Piccadilly Chowk via Himalaya Marg. These buses will reach ISBT Sector 17 from the small chowk near Gurdial Singh Petrol Pump.
To manage congestion during the dispersal phase, traffic will be diverted from ISBT Sector 17 Chowk on Udyog Path for a 45-minute period from 11.30 am to 12.15 pm. During this interval, only buses will be permitted to operate on the affected stretch.
Security Guidelines and Entry Requirements
A comprehensive security advisory has been issued for all attendees. Invitees are requested to be seated at the Parade Ground by 9.15 am to ensure timely commencement of the proceedings.
Entry gates have been assigned based on attendee categories:
- Special invitees should enter through gate numbers 6 and 7 on the Sector 22 side.
- The general public is to use gate numbers 8, 9, and 10 on the ISBT Sector 17 side.
- Media personnel are instructed to enter from gate number 5, opposite Sector 22.
All attendees must carry an original photo identity card. Special invitees are additionally required to prominently display the authorized parking label on their vehicles and carry their invitation cards.
The police have strictly prohibited bringing any objectionable items into the venue. This includes bags, matchboxes, knives, cigarettes, weapons, liquor, inflammable materials, electronic devices, black flags, banners, or posters.
Attendees are also requested to remain seated in their designated enclosures until the function concludes and to disperse in an orderly manner afterward.
Commuters Advised to Plan Ahead
The Chandigarh Police has urged commuters to utilize alternative routes during the restricted hours to avoid inconvenience. This advisory aims to facilitate a smooth and secure Republic Day celebration while minimizing disruption to the city's daily traffic flow.
