A shocking audio recording has exposed alleged misconduct within the Chennai police force, sparking widespread public outrage. The clip features a traffic investigation police writer verbally abusing a man who was severely injured in a recent road accident and had called to inquire about his case.
The Tragic Accident and Its Aftermath
The incident traces back to September 28, on the busy Tambaram-Velachery Road. Mahendran, who works part-time as a bike taxi driver, was ferrying a passenger named Nelson. Their journey turned tragic when two drunk bikers, speeding from the opposite direction, rammed into them head-on.
The impact was severe. Both Mahendran and Nelson were thrown from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. They were rushed to a government hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, Nelson succumbed to his injuries, while Mahendran continues to undergo treatment for the wounds he suffered.
The Viral Audio and Alleged Abuse of Power
While recovering, Mahendran reached out to the authorities on Thursday to check the status of the investigation into the accident that claimed his passenger's life. He contacted Hari, a writer from the Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation Wing.
Instead of receiving assistance or reassurance, Mahendran was met with a torrent of verbal abuse from the police official. Sources indicate that the hostility stemmed from the fact that Mahendran did not hire a lawyer recommended by Hari. This practice of recommending specific lawyers is reportedly common, raising serious questions about potential misconduct.
Internal Inquiry Launched
Following the public circulation of the audio clip, which quickly went viral on social media platforms, the police department has taken cognizance of the matter. An internal inquiry has been initiated to investigate the conduct of the police writer, Hari. The case highlights concerns over the treatment of victims and the ethical standards within the force.
