In a significant narcotics crackdown, customs officials at Chennai International Airport intercepted a major drug smuggling attempt on Wednesday night, leading to the seizure of 30 kilograms of high-grade hydroponic weed and the detention of three Indian passengers arriving from Malaysia.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Air Intelligence Unit of Chennai customs kept a close watch on incoming flights from Malaysia. Their vigilance paid off when they identified and intercepted three Indian male passengers who had just arrived from the Southeast Asian country.
The customs team conducted thorough checks of both the passengers and their check-in luggage. During the examination, officials discovered suspicious plastic bags containing what appeared to be plant material with distinct fruiting tops. The packages emitted a strong, pungent odour that immediately raised suspicions among the experienced customs sleuths.
Confirmation and Investigation
Using advanced field drug testing kits, customs officials confirmed that the seized substance was indeed hydroponic weed, a premium variety of cannabis known for its high potency. The total weight of the contraband was precisely 30 kilograms, making it one of the significant drug seizures at the airport in recent times.
All three passengers were immediately detained for detailed interrogation and further investigation. Customs authorities are exploring the possibility that the narcotics might have been originally smuggled into Malaysia from Thailand before being routed to Chennai in an attempt to avoid detection by security agencies.
