Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, calling the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices a 'gift' from the Prime Minister to the nation. He asserted that the country has been pushed into a 'tragic situation' under the current leadership.
Shivakumar's Remarks on Fuel Price Hike
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said, 'The increase in petrol and diesel prices is nothing but a gift from Modi ji to the people of India. The common man is suffering, and the government seems indifferent to their plight.' He accused the central government of failing to control inflation and providing no relief to citizens struggling with rising costs of living.
Criticism of Foreign Policy
Shivakumar also took aim at the Prime Minister's handling of international relations. 'PM Modi has failed in maintaining good relationships with neighboring countries. India's standing in the world has weakened, and our diplomacy is in shambles,' he stated. He specifically pointed to strained ties with China, Pakistan, and other regional partners, arguing that the government's aggressive posturing has isolated India on the global stage.
The Congress leader further alleged that the Modi administration's policies have led to economic distress and social unrest. 'The tragic situation we are in today is a direct result of mismanagement and misplaced priorities. Instead of focusing on development, the government is busy with divisive politics,' he added.
Political Reactions
Shivakumar's comments come amid a nationwide debate over fuel prices, which have touched record highs in several states. The opposition has consistently criticized the central government for not reducing taxes on petroleum products, which account for a significant portion of the retail price. In response, ruling party leaders have defended the hikes, citing global crude oil price volatility and the need for revenue generation.
The Deputy CM's remarks are expected to intensify political exchanges ahead of upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka. The state has been a hotbed of political activity, with both the Congress and BJP vying for power. Shivakumar, a prominent Congress leader, has been vocal in his criticism of the Modi government on various issues, including unemployment, farmer distress, and corruption.
Impact on Common People
The fuel price hike has had a cascading effect on the economy, leading to increased transportation costs and higher prices for essential commodities. For many households, the rise in fuel prices has strained already tight budgets. 'Every time prices go up, our expenses increase. There is no relief in sight,' said a local resident in Bengaluru.
Shivakumar urged the central government to roll back the price increase and provide immediate relief to the public. 'The people of India deserve better. They should not have to bear the burden of the government's failures,' he concluded.
