Chennai Police Crack Down on House Theft, Arrest Five Including Two Juveniles
In a significant development, the R K Nagar police in Chennai have apprehended five individuals, including two juveniles, for their alleged involvement in the theft of LPG cylinders and a water pump motor from a locked residence in Korukkupet. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about property crimes in the area.
Details of the Theft and Police Investigation
The case came to light when Jayachitra, 39, returned to her parents' house in Bharathi Nagar, Korukkupet, on April 7. She had locked the property on March 28 and discovered upon her return that the rear door lock had been forcibly broken. Missing from the house were two LPG cylinders and a water pump motor, prompting her to file a formal complaint with the authorities.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, the R K Nagar Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of three adult suspects: Shanmugam, 22, and Stephen alias Venkatesan, 19, both residents of Meenambal Nagar in Korukkupet, and Jegan, 19, from Grace Garden in Royapuram. Additionally, two juveniles, aged 16 and 17, were identified as accomplices in the offence.
Legal Proceedings and Outcomes
The three adult accused have been remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings. In contrast, the two juveniles were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). Following the board's review, they were subsequently sent to a government home for boys, as per the provisions of juvenile justice laws aimed at rehabilitation rather than punitive measures.
This case underscores the vigilance of Chennai police in tackling theft and burglary incidents, while also bringing attention to the involvement of minors in such crimes. Authorities continue to urge residents to secure their properties and report any suspicious activities promptly to prevent similar occurrences.
