Chennai Night Bike Racing Triggers Public Alarm and Police Action

Late-night high-speed bike racing by groups of youths on key Chennai thoroughfares, including the Perambur flyover, Anna Salai, and Aminjikarai, has ignited widespread panic among motorists and prompted a police crackdown. Videos of reckless stunts circulated on social media, highlighting ongoing safety concerns and enforcement challenges.

Dangerous Stunts and Public Disruption

On Monday, social media footage revealed youths racing motorcycles at excessive speeds on the Murasoli Maran flyover in Perambur. In one clip, a biker performed stunts while another filmed from the flyover, with passers-by who attempted to record the incident reportedly threatened by the racers. Similar incidents were reported on Anna Salai and near the Skywalk area in Aminjikarai, where over 15 youths engaged in racing from Wallajah junction to the Anna flyover late at night.

The sudden racing and stunts caused significant traffic disruption and fear among motorists, with many expressing frustration over repeated occurrences. "Bike racing continues unabated, especially during weekends. Police usually close the flyover thinking it will stop the races, but instead they should step up enforcement," said Kalaiselvan, a local motorist.

Police Response and Enforcement Efforts

Police personnel attempted to intercept the bikers by setting up checkpoints, but many escaped at high speed upon spotting officers. A few suspects detained near a mosque on Anna Salai were later released after an argument between police and the public, leading to brief tension in the area. Based on video and CCTV evidence, authorities have launched a search to identify and apprehend those involved.

Strict monitoring is now being carried out across the city to curb dangerous bike racing and stunts that endanger public safety, according to police statements. Traffic police have intensified night patrols and vehicle checks in several areas, including Marina Beach Road, Anna Salai, Wallajah Road, and the Perambur flyover.

Crackdown and Future Measures

During recent enforcement drives, police seized 27 motorcycles from youths involved in illegal racing and imposed fines. City police have issued warnings that strict action will be taken against those indulging in reckless riding and stunts on city roads. This crackdown aims to address motorists' claims that such incidents persist due to poor enforcement of rules and restrictions by traffic authorities.

The incidents underscore ongoing challenges in maintaining road safety in Chennai, with authorities emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to prevent future occurrences and protect public welfare.
