Chennai police have arrested a youth in connection with a murder-for-gain case in Guduvanchery, while a search is underway for an absconding suspect. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Saraswathi, a resident of Nandeeswarar Nagar, was reported missing on April 29 by her nephew, Dileepan, 35, a private company employee from Singaperumal Koil.
Investigation and Arrests
Following the missing person complaint, police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage. The footage revealed that Vinoth Kumar, 35, who lived near Saraswathi's house, and his associate, Dileepan Chakravarthy, 27, of Kodaikanal, were involved in the crime. Based on mobile phone signals, police traced Dileepan Chakravarthy to Kodaikanal and arrested him.
Confession and Details of the Crime
During interrogation, Dileepan Chakravarthy confessed that he and Vinoth Kumar smothered Saraswathi to death by covering her nose and mouth. They then robbed her of seven sovereigns of gold jewellery. The motive was financial gain, as the accused planned to sell the stolen ornaments.
Police are now actively searching for Vinoth Kumar, who remains at large. Further investigations are ongoing to recover the stolen jewellery and ascertain if there were any other accomplices.
