The announcement was made during the 'North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026', being held from June 15-16 at the Lariti Performing Centre in Shillong.
Infrastructure Boost for Northeast
The summit aims to showcase the potential of the Northeast region and attract investments. Sangma emphasized that the projects reflect the region's 'daring to dream' spirit, aiming to transform Meghalaya into a hub for sports and tourism. The mega football stadium is expected to host national and international matches, while the five-star hotels will cater to increasing tourist inflow.

While specific timelines and locations were not disclosed, the CM assured that detailed feasibility studies are underway. The stadium will have a seating capacity of over 50,000, making it one of the largest in the region. The hotels will be developed in partnership with leading hospitality chains.
This initiative is part of a broader push by the state government to enhance infrastructure, create jobs, and boost the local economy. The summit also features sessions on sustainable development, smart city planning, and investment opportunities in sectors like tourism, agriculture, and technology.
Meghalaya, known for its scenic beauty and rich culture, has been focusing on improving connectivity and amenities to attract more visitors. The new stadium and hotels are expected to significantly elevate the state's profile on the national and international stage.
Stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, noting that such developments could spur economic growth and provide employment opportunities for the youth.
