Chennai Police Arrest Two for Using Banned Manja Threads in Vanagaram
In a significant enforcement action, the Chennai police arrested two individuals in Vanagaram on Saturday for flying kites using prohibited manja threads. This arrest underscores the strict implementation of the procedural orders issued by the Chennai police commissioner, which ban the sale and use of manja threads within the limits of the Greater Chennai Police jurisdiction. The ban is in place due to the severe risks these threads pose, as they can lead to accidents resulting in tragic loss of lives.
Police Surveillance Leads to Apprehension
Acting on credible information, a dedicated police team conducted intensive surveillance in key areas, including near the Kanniyamman temple, Odam Nagar, and Vanagaram, on Saturday evening. Their efforts culminated in the apprehension of the two suspects, identified as Lokesh, aged 23, and Kamesh, aged 21. During the operation, authorities seized several items from the duo, including a kite, a spool containing the banned manja thread, and a mobile phone, which are now part of the evidence in the case.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation Findings
A formal case has been registered at the T-5 Vanagaram Police Station, marking the beginning of legal proceedings against the accused. The investigation revealed a concerning detail: the duo had purchased the dangerous manja thread online, highlighting the challenges in enforcing the ban in the digital age. Following their arrest, Lokesh and Kamesh were produced before the court, where they were remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal action.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with manja threads and the importance of adhering to safety regulations. The Chennai police continue to vigilantly monitor and enforce the ban to prevent potential accidents and protect public safety in the region.
