In a significant operation on Friday night, Chennai police confiscated a substantial amount of cash totaling ₹23.5 lakh from six individuals traveling in an unregistered SUV. The incident occurred during a routine vehicle check conducted by the Pondy Bazaar police on Thirumalaipillai Road in the bustling T Nagar area.
Details of the Vehicle Check and Seizure
Officers on duty spotted an SUV conspicuously lacking registration number plates, which immediately raised suspicion. Upon stopping the vehicle for inspection, they discovered a bag filled with bundles of cash stashed inside. The six occupants, who were detained for questioning, failed to produce any valid documents justifying the transportation of such a large sum of money.
Identities of the Detained Individuals
The group comprised Venkata Naga, identified as the owner of a finance company based in Andhra Pradesh; Padma Subbaiah, a seafood exporter; his driver, Ashwin Kumar; and three employees named Ganesh, Khanna Mahesh, and Sandeep Verma. During interrogation, they claimed that the cash was provided to them by an individual named Seenu, described as a chilli trader operating from Silukulur Pettai.
Income Tax Investigation Initiated
Given the substantial amount involved and the lack of proper documentation, the police promptly informed the Income Tax authorities about the seizure. Income Tax officials have since launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the origin of the funds and determine whether any tax evasion or illicit activities are involved.
