A police constable serving in a station under the Avadi commissionerate in Chennai is now under intense investigation for his alleged involvement in a shocking narcotics racket. Authorities are probing claims that the policeman sold ganja (cannabis) after receiving payment through an online money portal.
Racket Busted in Kodungaiyur Raid
The case came to light after the Kodungaiyur police, acting on a specific tip-off, busted a ganja peddling network. A special team operating under the Pulianthope deputy commissioner received information about ganja being stored at a house in Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar, located in the Kodungaiyur area.
Acting swiftly on this intelligence, police conducted a raid on the house late on Monday night. The operation led to the significant seizure of 3 kilograms of ganja along with three knives. This raid marked the beginning of a deeper investigation that would unexpectedly point towards a member of the police force.
Policeman's Alleged Role Uncovered
During the subsequent investigation, police arrested at least four individuals connected to the racket and detained another person for detailed questioning. It was during the interrogation of two of the arrested men that the constable's alleged role surfaced.
The arrested individuals confessed to investigators that they had contacted the policeman in question to procure ganja. They stated that they transferred a sum of ₹25,000 to him using an online money transfer service. Following the receipt of the payment, the constable reportedly met the two men near the Porur toll plaza and handed over approximately 9 grams of ganja to them.
The individual from whose bank account the online transfer was made has been detained by police for further inquiry as they work to establish the complete money trail.
Criminal and Departmental Action Awaits
Senior police officials have confirmed that the constable, who has not been arrested as of now, will face severe consequences if his involvement is proven. Both criminal proceedings and stringent departmental action are on the cards for the accused policeman.
Authorities are also working to ascertain the exact nature of his involvement. A key line of inquiry is determining whether the policeman sourced the ganja from external suppliers to sell, or if he siphoned off contraband that had been seized from offenders in previous police cases. His role is being examined in minute detail to uncover the full extent of the operation.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local police establishment, highlighting concerns about corruption and the misuse of position within the force. The investigation remains active as officials piece together the evidence.
