A wave of protests swept through Chhatarpur in south Delhi on Tuesday after a 17-year-old boy, who was shot in the head on May 26, succumbed to his injuries. The teenager had been hospitalized at the AIIMS Trauma Centre on ventilator support but died on Monday, prompting an outpouring of grief and anger from family members and local residents.
Road Blockade and Demands for Justice
In the lead-up to the victim's last rites, a large crowd of women and residents gathered in the area, placing the body on the road to block traffic. Demonstrators raised slogans against the accused and demanded swift and strict action. The protest caused significant traffic disruptions, with heavy congestion reported on SSN Marg and Chhattarpur Mandir Marg. According to a traffic advisory, movement towards Maidan Garhi, Rajpur Khurd, Chandan Hola, Dera, Shani Dham, and Bhati Mines was also affected.
Family's Anguish and Appeal
Emotions ran high as family members engaged in heated arguments with police personnel. The victim's aunt, speaking on behalf of the family, said, "Now that he is gone, we want justice for him. The person who took his life should face the harshest punishment under the law. We have lost everything, and nothing can bring him back. All we ask is that justice is delivered."
Investigation Intensified
Following the teenager's death, the police have escalated their investigation. The case, initially registered on charges of attempted murder, has been converted to murder. The probe has been transferred to the Crime Branch for further action. Authorities have apprehended three individuals, including a 16-year-old juvenile suspected to be the main shooter, who was taken into custody on May 28. Another accused, identified as Jai Kumar, has been arrested. A fourth suspect is still at large. The police have recovered the weapon used in the crime as well as the vehicle linked to the incident.
Police Deployment and Ongoing Protests
A heavy police presence was deployed to maintain law and order as the protests continued. The family and residents gathered at CDR Chowk, alleging inadequate action from the authorities and seeking assurances that justice would be served. The situation remains tense, with the community united in their demand for a thorough investigation and swift legal proceedings.
