Child Injured in Escalator Mishap at Delhi's Mandi House Metro Station
A four-year-old child sustained injuries after his fingers got trapped in an escalator at Mandi House Metro Station on Monday, prompting a swift emergency response from authorities. The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols in public transport facilities.
Details of the Escalator Incident
According to police reports, the accident occurred when a woman was descending from the concourse level to the platform via Violet Line escalator number 4, accompanied by her young nephew. During the descent, the child reportedly sat down on the moving escalator steps. This action led to his fingers becoming caught between the escalator step and the skirt panel, resulting in significant injuries.
Immediate Emergency Response
Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Delhi Police, who were present at the station, immediately rushed to assist the child. In coordination with the station controller, they arranged for urgent medical attention. The child was promptly shifted to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials confirmed that the child was attended to without delay and is currently undergoing medical care at the hospital. His parents have since reached the medical facility to be with him during this time.
DMRC Issues Safety Advisory
In response to the incident, DMRC released a statement urging commuters to exercise heightened caution while using escalators, particularly when travelling with children. A senior official emphasized, "We strongly advise passengers to hold handrails and ensure that children are supervised at all times to prevent such unfortunate incidents." This advisory underscores the importance of vigilance in crowded public spaces to avoid similar accidents.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with escalators in metro stations and other high-traffic areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and reinforce safety measures to protect commuters.
