Chinnaswamy Stampede: HC Allows Accused Execs to Travel to Brazil

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday allowed two executives, who are accused in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede case, to travel to Brazil for business purposes. The court imposed certain conditions, including the submission of a fixed deposit receipt of Rs 5 lakh each and furnishing a personal bond.

Background of the Case

The stampede incident occurred on October 16, 2023, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during a concert, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to several others. The accused executives are associated with the event management company that organized the concert.

Court's Order

Justice M. Nagaprasanna, while allowing the petition, directed the accused to provide a fixed deposit receipt of Rs 5 lakh each and execute a personal bond. They must also inform the investigating officer about their travel itinerary and return to India within the stipulated time.

The court noted that the accused are required to attend business meetings in Brazil and that their travel is essential for their professional commitments. The prosecution had opposed the plea, citing the seriousness of the offense. However, the court observed that the accused have cooperated with the investigation and there is no likelihood of them absconding.

Conditions Imposed

  • Submission of a fixed deposit receipt of Rs 5 lakh each.
  • Furnishing a personal bond.
  • Informing the investigating officer about the travel schedule.
  • Returning to India within the permitted duration.

The accused executives have been directed to surrender their passports upon return and appear before the trial court as required. The case is scheduled for further hearing next month.
