The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was formally inducted at the strategically vital Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi on Wednesday. This move marks a significant step in the Union Home Ministry's initiative to standardize civil aviation security under a specialized federal force.
Strategic Importance of Safdarjung Airport
Officials highlighted that the 213-acre airport, located in south Delhi near Aurobindo Marg and surrounded by government and military installations, serves as the capital's primary hub for VVIP helicopter movements. It handles flights of the President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister.
Security Concerns and Recommendations
Given the open, road-facing runway, nearby vegetation, and dense residential neighborhoods, security agencies recommended replacing local policing with comprehensive CISF coverage to address potential vulnerabilities.
73rd Airport Under CISF
With this induction, Safdarjung Airport becomes the 73rd airport under CISF protection. A dedicated 136-member unit will guard the facility, operating perimeter patrols, Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS), X-ray Baggage Inspection Systems (X-BIS), Under Vehicle Scanning Systems (UVSS), and advanced CCTV systems.
