CJI Surya Kant Clarifies 'Cockroach' Remark on Unemployed Youth

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has clarified his recent remarks comparing some unemployed youngsters to 'cockroaches', stating that his observations were misquoted and were specifically aimed at individuals entering professions with fake and bogus degrees. Issuing a statement a day after the remarks sparked controversy, CJI Kant said he had immense respect for Indian youth and described them as pillars of a developed India.

Background of the Controversy

The clarification came after strong observations made during a Supreme Court hearing on a petition seeking senior advocate designation. A bench comprising CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi had criticised the petitioner's conduct and raised concerns over alleged fake law degrees. The petitioner later apologised before the court and withdrew the plea, which was allowed by the bench.

Clarification Statement

In his statement, CJI Kant emphasised that his remarks were taken out of context. He expressed deep respect for the youth of India, calling them the backbone of the nation's progress. He reiterated that his comments were directed only at those who misuse the system by obtaining fake degrees, thereby undermining the integrity of professional fields.
