NEW DELHI: Chief Justice Surya Kant on Saturday expressed pain over a section of the media misquoting his comments on youth during courtroom proceedings on Friday. He clarified that his criticism was directed at individuals joining the legal profession with bogus degrees and behaving like parasites.
Statement by CJI Surya Kant
In a statement, CJI Kant said, “What I had specifically criticised were those who have entered professions like the Bar with the aid of fake and bogus degrees. Such persons have sneaked into media, social media, and other noble professions” and are attempting to weaken every system like parasites.
Context of the Remarks
The CJI-led bench was critical of an advocate seeking a judicial direction to the Delhi High Court to designate him as senior advocate. The bench observed that it was looking for an appropriate case to order a CBI inquiry into the genuineness of degrees of many masquerading as advocates in Delhi.
CJI Surya Kant emphasised that it was beyond his imagination to criticise the youth of the country, with whom he shares mutual respect. “It is totally baseless to suggest that I criticised the youth of our nation. Not only am I proud of our present and future human resource, but every youth of India inspires me. It is not an exaggeration to say that Indian youth have great regard and respect for me, and I too see them as the pillars of a developed India.”
He reiterated his faith in the youth and condemned the misrepresentation of his words. The clarification aims to set the record straight and reaffirm his admiration for the younger generation.
