Clash at Malpe Port: Two Cases Filed After Fishermen Fight

Udupi: Malpe police have registered two separate cases following a violent clash between fishermen at Malpe port on Thursday. The incident has sparked tension in the local fishing community.

Details of the Assault

According to police, the altercation stems from a financial dispute. Jayesh Kotyan, a fishing businessman, allegedly owes money to Harish. The incident occurred when Harish was at the auction shed at Malpe port in Kodavoor village. At that time, Jayesh Kotyan's mother, Bharati Kotyan, along with Uday Poojari alias Kori Uday, Sheku Katapadi, and Parushottam, arrived in a car. The group allegedly verbally abused Harish in Tulu, grabbed him by the neck, and pushed him onto the concrete road.

Jayesh Kotyan then allegedly kicked Harish in the chest and private parts with his bare feet. The situation escalated when Jayesh Kotyan attempted to stab Harish with a knife, but Harish managed to escape. Locals later admitted Harish to a hospital in Udupi for treatment. A video of the assault was recorded by an unknown person and circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention.

Legal Action

A complaint was filed demanding legal action against Jayesh Kotyan and others in connection with the assault. Based on this, a case has been registered at Malpe police station under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 352, 115(2), 109 along with 190 of the BNS.

Counter-Complaint

In a separate development, Jayesh Kotyan's mother, Bharati Kotyan, filed a counter-complaint against Harish. Consequently, a case under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 352, 115(2), 109, 74 along with 190 of the BNS has been registered against Harish.

Investigation Underway

SP Hariram Shankar confirmed that both cases have been registered and are currently under investigation. Police are examining the video evidence and gathering statements from witnesses to ascertain the sequence of events. Further action will be taken based on the findings.
