Controversial Speech and Social Media Fallout

The legal action stems from a speech delivered by Salim on May 5, 2024, during what was described as a social reform and educational awareness conference held in Bhagalpur district of Bihar. During his address, Salim allegedly made derogatory comments targeting the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's mother.

These remarks later circulated widely on various social media platforms, generating sharp reactions from the public and authorities alike. The viral nature of the content prompted legal proceedings to be initiated in Uttar Pradesh, leading to the registration of formal complaints.

Video Apology and Expression of Remorse

Following his detention, Salim recorded a video statement in which he openly admitted his mistake and expressed sincere remorse for his actions. In the video, he stated, I, Abdullah Salim, admit my mistake. During the conference, some inappropriate and offensive words came out of my mouth which should not have been spoken.

He continued with a heartfelt apology, saying, I fold my hands and sincerely apologise for my actions. Salim further assured that such an incident would not be repeated and appealed to others to exercise greater restraint in their public speeches.

Emphasizing the importance of social harmony, he added, No statement should be made that hurts any individual, religion or disturbs social harmony. The cleric specifically sought forgiveness from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his remarks.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Police officials confirmed that two separate FIRs have been registered against Salim in Uttar Pradesh. One was filed at the Nagar Kotwali police station in Bahraich district, while another was registered in Balrampur district. The charges involve relevant sections pertaining to promoting enmity and making inflammatory statements that could disrupt public order.

After being transferred to Uttar Pradesh, Salim was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody. He has since been incarcerated at the Bahraich district jail as legal proceedings continue.

Comprehensive Investigation Underway

Officials indicated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are conducting thorough legal scrutiny, which includes:

  • Examination of video evidence from the speech
  • Analysis of digital trails and social media activity
  • Collection and verification of witness statements

Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to taking strict action in cases involving inflammatory or derogatory public remarks that have the potential to disturb communal harmony and social peace.
