Coimbatore man attempts to murder wife over debt quarrels

Coimbatore: The Vadavalli police have taken swift action, registering a serious case of attempt to murder against a 37-year-old man for a brutal assault on his wife. The incident, rooted in persistent financial strain, unfolded in the Kalveerampalayam area on Tuesday night.

Debt-Fuelled Quarrel Turns Violent

According to police officials, the accused, identified as K Devaraj, aged 37, and his wife, D Baby, aged 38, parents to two daughters, had a history of frequent arguments. The primary source of tension was the family's mounting debts. On the night of December 30, another heated quarrel erupted between the couple over their precarious financial situation.

The verbal altercation quickly escalated into physical violence. Devaraj began to assault his wife. When their terrified daughters tried to intervene and stop the attack, their father turned on them. He threatened the children and forced them to leave the house, leaving Baby alone and vulnerable to further violence.

A Deceptive Call and the Truth Emerges

After some time, in a calculated move, Devaraj contacted his wife's sister. He falsely informed her that Baby had suffered a fall and lost consciousness. Alarmed by this news, the sister rushed to the scene and immediately arranged for Baby to be taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for urgent treatment.

It was only later, when the couple's daughters revealed the horrifying truth of the assault, that the real story came to light. Upon learning that her sister's injuries were not from an accident but a deliberate act of violence, Baby's sister took a firm stand. She proceeded to the Vadavalli police station on Wednesday and lodged a formal complaint against Devaraj.

Police Launch Investigation

Acting on the complaint, the Vadavalli police have officially registered a case under the stringent charge of attempt to murder against K Devaraj. A thorough investigation into the entire sequence of events is now underway. The case highlights the severe consequences of domestic disputes, especially those exacerbated by financial pressures, and the critical role of family intervention in seeking justice.
