Coimbatore: Son's Mistaken Identification Nearly Leads to Burial of Wrong Body
In a startling case that has shocked residents of Pethanaickanur near Anaimalai, a son's misidentification of a deceased elderly man as his missing father almost resulted in the burial of the wrong body. The incident, which unfolded over several days, has raised questions about identification procedures and sparked social media controversy.
The Search for a Missing Father
Kalidas, 38, from Pethanaickanur had been desperately searching for his 63-year-old father, Marudhamuthu, for over two weeks. The elderly man had gone missing, leaving his family anxious and conducting extensive searches throughout the area.
Hospital Admission and Tragic Death
On March 6, an unidentified elderly man was found unconscious near Thensangampalayam and was immediately admitted to Pollachi Government Hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred the same day to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Despite medical efforts, the man passed away on March 7 without regaining consciousness.
With no one coming forward to claim the body, CMCH officials notified the Kotur police, initiating standard procedures for unclaimed deceased persons.
The Fateful Identification
Learning about Kalidas's search for his missing father, Kotur police asked him to view the body and confirm whether it was Marudhamuthu. According to police reports, Kalidas positively identified the deceased elderly man as his father.
"Kalidas confirmed that the deceased elderly man was his father," stated a police officer involved in the case. "The family specifically requested that no postmortem examination be conducted and took possession of the body for funeral arrangements in Pollachi."
Last-Minute Intervention
The situation took a dramatic turn on Monday, just minutes before the planned burial. A relative of Kalidas intervened, presenting crucial evidence: a video showing Marudhamuthu walking alive in a neighboring area.
This revelation immediately halted the funeral proceedings. The family quickly brought the actual Marudhamuthu home, confirming he was indeed alive and well. They then returned the unidentified body to CMCH on Monday evening, creating an unprecedented situation for hospital authorities.
Social Media Backlash and Official Response
The incident quickly went viral on social media platforms, with many users accusing CMCH of negligence in handing over the elderly man's body to the wrong people. Critics questioned hospital protocols and identification verification processes.
Refuting these allegations, B Saravanapriya, Resident Medical Officer at CMCH, provided clarification: "The hospital management handed over the body only after his own son identified the body as his father. As the family requested not to conduct a postmortem, we took a written statement from the son and family members."
Saravanapriya emphasized that proper procedures were followed, noting that "since the body has been handed back to CMCH, police have initiated a probe to identify the body."
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The Kotur police have now launched a comprehensive investigation to:
- Establish the true identity of the deceased elderly man
- Determine the circumstances of his death
- Locate his actual family members
- Review identification protocols to prevent similar incidents
Meanwhile, the incident has created significant tension among Kalidas's relatives and villagers in Pethanaickanur. Many are questioning how such a misidentification could occur, particularly given the emotional state of a son searching for his missing father.
The case highlights the complex challenges faced by authorities when dealing with unclaimed bodies and the emotional turmoil families experience during missing person searches. It also underscores the importance of thorough verification processes, even in emotionally charged situations.
