Tragic Road Accident Claims Life of Bihar Transport Constable on NH-139
A devastating road accident on National Highway 139 in Bihar's Arwal district has resulted in the death of a young constable from the state transport department's mobile squad. The incident occurred late Monday night during routine vehicle-checking operations, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel on duty.
Constable Mukesh Kumar Identified as Victim
The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Mukesh Kumar, son of Manager Yadav, originally from Pratapnagar village under Dumraon police station area in Buxar district. Tragically, Mukesh had been married for just eight months to Munni Kumari, who also serves as a constable with the transport department in Bhagalpur.
Chain of Events Leading to Fatal Collision
According to police reports, the accident unfolded near Balidad Bazar in the Mehendia police station area. The transport department team was actively engaged in checking vehicles for traffic violations and had just issued a challan to a truck driver for overloading his vehicle with sweet potatoes.
"During this routine inspection, a gravel-laden truck approaching at high speed from the Aurangabad side suddenly lost control," explained police officials. The out-of-control vehicle first collided with a parked truck on the roadside.
The impact of this initial collision proved catastrophic. The stationary truck was pushed directly into the transport department's SUV, where motor vehicle inspector Vipul Kumar was seated. Constable Mukesh Kumar was caught between the SUV and the truck, suffering severe injuries that proved fatal on the spot.
Multiple Casualties and Emergency Response
The accident resulted in multiple casualties beyond the fatality. Another constable, Gautam Kumar, and the truck driver, Praveen Yadav, sustained serious injuries. Motor vehicle inspector Vipul Kumar also suffered injuries in the collision.
Local residents and fellow police personnel immediately rushed to the scene, providing initial assistance before transporting the injured to the sadar hospital in Arwal for emergency treatment. After receiving first aid, the critically injured truck driver was referred to Patna for advanced medical care.
Police Investigation and Traffic Disruption
Police authorities seized both vehicles involved in the collision as evidence. The busy NH-139 experienced temporary traffic disruption following the accident, but normal movement was restored once the vehicles were cleared from the roadway.
On receiving information about the tragic incident, Arwal DSP Kriti Kamal arrived at the scene to conduct an on-site investigation. "The deceased constable's body was sent to the district hospital for postmortem examination, and his family has been informed," stated DSP Kamal.
Critical Condition of Truck Driver
SHO Chandan Kumar Jha provided additional details about the severity of the accident. "The truck driver who lost control of his vehicle became trapped in the front portion after the collision," he explained. "He lost both his legs and was in critical condition. Rescue teams had to use a gas cutter to extract him from the vehicle's front compartment before referring him to PMCH for specialized treatment."
Official Inquiry Ordered
The district administration has ordered a comprehensive inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident. Investigators will examine multiple factors including excessive speed and loss of vehicle control that contributed to this tragic event.
The sudden loss has plunged Constable Mukesh Kumar's family into profound grief, particularly affecting his newlywed wife who serves in the same department. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by transport department personnel while performing their duties on Bihar's highways.
