A contractor has been taken into custody by Gurgaon police following the tragic death of a young labourer during a dangerous basement excavation operation in Sector 56. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has highlighted severe lapses in construction site safety protocols.
Details of the Tragic Collapse
Police authorities reported that the fatal accident took place at Plot No. 26 in E Block of Sector 56. Information received through the police control room indicated that several workers were trapped under a sudden collapse of soil. A team rushed to the location and found a crowd gathered outside the plot, with locals confirming that labourers had been buried during the excavation work.
Immediate rescue operations were launched. The crime scene unit was informed, and a magistrate was called to the site. Rescuers managed to pull out two labourers initially, but a third remained trapped under the earth. After persistent digging efforts, the third worker was finally rescued. All three injured individuals were swiftly transported to Marengo Hospital in Sector 56 for emergency treatment.
The Fatal Outcome and Worker's Complaint
One of the rescued labourers, identified as Badal, was in critical condition. He was later shifted to Civil Hospital in Sector 10, where doctors declared him dead. His body was sent to the mortuary for further formalities.
The case took a decisive turn when one of the injured workers, Govind, submitted a formal complaint. He stated that the contractor, Shivpukar Giri (46), a resident of Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh, had brought him, his brother Roshan, and three others—Uday, Sagar, and the deceased Badal—from their villages specifically for this basement excavation project.
In his complaint, Govind made a serious allegation. He claimed that while work typically halted in the evening, the contractor forced the team to continue for two extra hours after dark, promising them additional payment for the overtime. This work was allegedly carried out without any safety equipment and beyond the legally permitted working hours, creating a highly hazardous environment.
Legal Action and Arrest
Based on Govind's complaint, the Gurgaon police registered a case under relevant sections of the law pertaining to negligence and acts leading to death. Following the registration of the FIR, the police arrested the accused contractor, Shivpukar Giri, on Tuesday.
This incident has once again brought the issue of worker safety, especially at construction sites in rapidly developing areas like Gurgaon, into sharp focus. The police investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of negligence and violations of construction safety norms that led to this preventable loss of a young life.
