A young man's ordinary ride in Ahmedabad turned into a life-threatening crisis, only to be saved by the swift and decisive action of a city police constable. The incident, which unfolded on Monday evening, highlights the dangers posed by kite strings and the courage of first responders.
A Sudden and Severe Injury on Memco Bridge
The victim, a 21-year-old, was riding his two-wheeler across the Memco bridge when disaster struck. A stray kite string, thin and sharp, slashed across his neck, causing a deep and serious wound. The impact left him bleeding heavily and stranded on the road, unable to help himself as his condition rapidly deteriorated.
Constable Bhavik Desai's Decisive Rescue
Fortunately, Police Constable Bhavik Desai was driving just behind him. Witnessing the accident, Desai immediately sprang into action. He did not wait for an ambulance, recognizing the critical need for speed. "I slowed down and saw him bleeding heavily," Desai recounted. His first step was to use his own handkerchief as a makeshift bandage to try and stem the bleeding from the neck wound.
After calling the emergency helpline, Desai assessed the situation. Realizing that every second counted, he made the crucial decision to transport the injured youth himself. He ensured the young man was not dizzy and then helped him onto his own motorcycle.
A Race Against Time to the Hospital
A video of the rescue, which later went viral, shows Constable Desai expertly navigating through traffic with one arm while using the other to securely hold the wounded passenger. His familiarity with the area proved invaluable. Within minutes, he reached a surgical hospital located just 500 meters away.
At the hospital, doctors acted quickly, stitching the deep wound with 20 sutures. They later confirmed that the constable's prompt action was vital, stating that any further delay could have had fatal consequences for the young man.
Desai displayed further compassion by staying at the hospital until the victim's father and brother arrived. "I knew he was in safe hands and left," the humble constable said. The viral video of the incident on Tuesday brought well-deserved public praise for Desai's presence of mind and bravery.
