In a shocking incident in Tirunelveli, a couple was arrested on Monday for the murder of their 22-year-old daughter, allegedly over her extramarital relationship with her brother-in-law. The parents had initially attempted to pass off the killing as a suicide.
Details of the Arrest
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sivan, 60, and Vairammal, 57, residents of Shenbagaramanallur near Moolaikaraipatti in Tirunelveli district. The deceased, Amudha, 22, was their unmarried younger daughter.
Initial Report and Suspicion
On Sunday morning, the parents informed the Moolaikaraipatti police that Amudha had died by suicide after consuming poison. However, police grew suspicious after noticing strangulation injuries on her neck. A subsequent investigation revealed glaring inconsistencies in the parents' statements.
Investigation Findings
Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had been facing significant internal conflict over allegations of an extramarital relationship between Amudha and her brother-in-law. The situation reached a breaking point, leading the parents to kill their daughter.
Confession and Arrest
The parents confessed to the crime, admitting that on Saturday, they had forced their daughter to consume poison. When she did not die from the poisoning, they strangled her to ensure her death. Following the confession, police formally arrested Sivan and Vairammal. They were produced before a magistrate and have been remanded in judicial custody.
