A Midnapore court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against Abhishek Banerjee’s personal assistant, Sumit Roy, in an extortion case related to a Salboni land deal. Roy has moved the Calcutta High Court with an anticipatory bail plea in connection with this case.
Roy is currently absconding and is wanted in an FIR filed by the Salboni police station in the same case. His counsel, Sabyasachi Banerjee, approached the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta with the anticipatory bail plea. The plea was allowed to be filed. The Salboni police had conducted a search operation at Abhishek’s residence early Saturday morning in search of Roy.
Additionally, police raids were conducted in Hooghly. However, Roy could not be traced. Following this, the police approached the Midnapore court with a prayer to issue an arrest warrant against Roy. Accepting the prayer, the Midnapore court issued the arrest warrant against him. APP Syed Nazim Habib said, “The police had applied for the issuance of an arrest warrant, and the judge granted the order.”
Meanwhile, former Midnapore MLA Sujoy Hazra was produced in court on Monday. He had been in police custody for 8 days following allegations of a land scam against him. The Midnapore CJM Court rejected his bail plea and remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
