In a tragic incident from Lucknow, police have apprehended a 27-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting his cousin, a first-year BA student, who later died after consuming a poisonous substance. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, underscores a harrowing tale of prolonged abuse and silence.
Case Emerges from a Suicide Note
The matter first came to the attention of the authorities on January 1, when the young woman's father approached the police to report his daughter's death. The girl had consumed poison and succumbed during treatment. However, the investigation took a critical turn when a suicide note was discovered.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava revealed that the note contained grave allegations. The student explicitly accused her cousin of raping her and stated that she had been subjected to sexual assault over an extended period. The note also detailed how the accused had threatened her and her family to prevent her from speaking out about the ordeal.
Details of the Assault and Aftermath
The victim, a native of Hardoi district, lived with her family in Lucknow where her father works as a vegetable vendor. The alleged assault occurred in December, during a period when her parents and brothers were away in their native village. The girl was left at home under the care of her grandmother and the cousin, who had been staying with the family for several years.
Following the traumatic incident, the student consumed poison. She was initially rushed to a private hospital before being referred to Balrampur Hospital, where she tragically passed away during treatment. It was only after her death that family members found the suicide note, which laid bare the trauma she had endured.
Arrest Follows Manhunt
The accused cousin fled after the incident, prompting a police search. Acting on specific intelligence, officers managed to track him down. SHO of Para police station, Suresh Singh, confirmed, "The accused was on the run. Acting on a tip-off, he was arrested from Hardoi district."
The arrest marks a significant step in the case, but it also brings to light the severe pressures and threats that often prevent survivors from reporting such crimes. The police investigation is ongoing as they work to build a comprehensive case based on the evidence and the contents of the suicide note.
