Cow Vigilante Seer Killed in Tragic Highway Accident, Sparks Violent Protests
A prominent seer associated with cow vigilantism in Mathura was tragically crushed to death by a speeding truck in dense fog on the busy Delhi-Agra National Highway early Saturday morning. The incident triggered massive and violent protests by locals after rumors spread that the man, identified as Chandrashekhar alias 'Farsa Wale Baba', was deliberately run over by cow smugglers.
Violent Protests Erupt, Highway Blocked for Hours
According to police officials, the situation escalated rapidly as a large crowd assembled on NH-19, blocking the crucial highway for over three hours. The protest turned violent with intense stone-pelting targeting security forces. Police had to resort to tear gas shelling to disperse the agitated mob. Additional security forces, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary, were called in to bring the volatile situation under control.
During the violence, multiple vehicles were damaged, including those belonging to police and other officials. At least three police officers suffered injuries in the clashes. Authorities confirmed that approximately ten protesters were detained during the operation to clear the highway and restore order.
Details of the Tragic Accident Emerge
Chandrashekhar, who operated cow shelters in Mathura, had reached the highway stretch in Kosikalan area around 4 am on Saturday. Acting on information that cows were being transported, he and fellow cow vigilantes stopped a container truck with Nagaland registration plates. However, upon inspection, the container was found to be carrying only soap, phenyl, and shampoo bottles - not livestock.
While the inspection was underway, a speeding truck approached in the dense fog conditions and collided with the stationary container vehicle. The impact caused the truck to run over Chandrashekhar, resulting in his immediate death. The driver of the speeding truck, identified as Khurshid Anwar, suffered critical injuries in the collision and later died at a hospital in Agra.
Official Statements and Community Response
DIG Range (Agra) Shailesh Pandey clarified the sequence of events, stating, "The incident occurred when a few cow vigilantes, including the seer, had stopped a vehicle for inspection. Due to the dense fog conditions, another truck coming from behind struck the stationary vehicle, leading to Chandrashekhar's tragic death. Subsequently, some individuals placed his body at an intersection on the national highway and blocked all traffic."
Mathura District Magistrate CP Singh acknowledged Chandrashekhar's standing in the community, noting, "Baba was respected by many people in Mathura. His followers have presented several demands, including that the cow shelters operated by him should now be administered by local authorities. We have agreed that a memorial site will be constructed in his honor."
Singh added, "Ten individuals have been detained in connection with the violence, and we are identifying others involved. Strict legal action will be taken against all those responsible for the disruption. Our efforts continue to fully restore order in the area."
Political Context and Aftermath
The incident occurred during a sensitive period when President Droupadi Murmu was conducting a 'parikrama' at Govardhan parvat in the region. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the administration's handling of the situation following the violence.
Chandrashekhar was cremated later in the day amid heavy police presence to maintain security and prevent further unrest. The tragic accident and subsequent protests have highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding cow protection movements in the region, while authorities work to investigate the exact circumstances of the fatal collision and address community concerns.
