KRISHNAGIRI: Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other locals staged a protest on Monday outside the Uthangarai revenue divisional office in Krishnagiri district, demanding legal action against eight individuals accused of using caste-based slurs and obscene language against a farmer belonging to a Scheduled Caste community.
Incident Details
V Dharman, a farmer from Perumalnaickanpatti, was allegedly subjected to abuse on April 25 while working on his own land. According to the complaint, a group of eight people, including Marappan and his wife Rani from Kattusingiripatti, approached him and claimed ownership of the land. They reportedly used caste-based slurs and obscene words, causing humiliation to Dharman and his family.
CPM district president Panchalarasan stated that although Dharman filed a complaint at the Kallavi police station on the same day, no action has been taken even after two months. The party leader alleged that the police are favoring dominant caste groups.
Protest Demands
The protesters demanded swift legal proceedings under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the eight accused. Around 50 people, including CPM members and villagers, participated in the protest, which lasted over an hour. Police assured the protesters that they would look into the issue.
