The death toll from a passenger bus crash in Ethiopia's Amhara region has risen to 31, authorities confirmed on Monday, as rescue teams continued recovery operations and treatment of the injured.
Bus Plunges into Ravine
The bus, traveling from Dessie to the capital Addis Ababa, veered off the road and plunged into a 100-meter-deep ravine. Dozens of passengers were injured, with several reported to be in serious condition.
Rescue Operations Underway
Survivors were transported to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for treatment, while emergency responders continued search and recovery efforts at the crash site. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash and establish how the vehicle left the road.
Road Accidents a Persistent Concern
Fatal road accidents remain a recurring problem in Ethiopia, where poor road infrastructure, aging vehicles, and inadequate safety standards contribute to high traffic-related death rates. This incident is among the deadliest road accidents reported in the country this year. In December 2024, around 66 people were killed when a vehicle carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in the Sidama Region, according to the Associated Press.
