NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn of events, workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday attacked a vehicle belonging to Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials during a protest outside the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram. The protest was organized against the central agency's searches at ten premises across Kerala, including Vijayan's residence, in connection with the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) case, as reported by news agency ANI.
Background of the CMRL Case
The Enforcement Directorate has been investigating the CMRL case, which involves allegations of illegal mining and financial irregularities. The searches conducted at multiple locations, including the residences of prominent political figures, have sparked widespread political reactions in the state.
Protest Turns Violent
According to eyewitnesses, the CPM workers, who were demonstrating peacefully initially, turned aggressive when ED officials attempted to leave the area. The protesters surrounded the ED vehicle, damaged its windshield, and shouted slogans against the central government and the investigating agency. Police had to intervene to disperse the crowd and ensure the safety of the officials.
The incident highlights the escalating tension between the state's ruling party and central investigative agencies. CPM leaders have accused the ED of conducting a politically motivated witch-hunt targeting the party's senior leadership.
Political Reactions
State BJP leaders condemned the attack, calling it an act of hooliganism and a blatant disregard for the rule of law. They demanded strict action against the perpetrators. On the other hand, CPM spokespersons defended the protest, stating that it was a legitimate expression of dissent against the alleged misuse of central agencies to destabilize the state government.
The ED has not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack. However, sources indicate that the agency may seek additional security for its teams operating in Kerala.
This incident is likely to further strain the relationship between the Kerala government and the central government, with both sides trading accusations over the handling of the case.
