Goa Crime Branch Assumes Control of High-Profile Case Against YouTuber
The criminal case registered against YouTuber Gautam Khattar at the Vasco police station for making inflammatory statements against St Francis Xavier has been officially handed over to the crime branch on Tuesday. This strategic move aims to enhance investigative efficiency and accelerate the process of locating and apprehending the accused.
Chief Minister's Directive and Police Action
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed the transfer, emphasizing that it was implemented to facilitate the tracing of Khattar and ensure his swift arrest. "Multiple specialized teams are now actively working to apprehend the accused as soon as possible," stated a senior crime branch officer, highlighting the intensified efforts.
The controversy erupted when Khattar made derogatory remarks about St Francis Xavier during an event in Vasco on April 18. His comments triggered widespread protests and public outrage across Goa, leading to a surge in police complaints from concerned citizens and religious groups.
Legal Charges and Investigation Details
Following the uproar, a formal case was registered against Khattar on April 19 under sections related to hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion. The office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police issued an order on Tuesday mandating the immediate transfer of the case to the crime branch for a more focused probe.
South Goa Superintendent of Police Santosh Dessai provided an update on the manhunt, revealing that a police team has already been dispatched to Dehradun to track down Khattar. "The team proceeded to Dehradun yesterday and is tasked with locating Gautam Khattar at the earliest," Dessai said.
Scope of Complaints and Ongoing Probe
Dessai further noted that numerous complaints have been lodged against Khattar in connection with the incident. "We have accepted all of these complaints, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway," he added, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter.
The transfer to the crime branch signifies a heightened level of scrutiny and resource allocation, reflecting the case's sensitivity and the administration's commitment to addressing violations of religious harmony promptly and effectively.
