In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Bettiah Cyber Police in Bihar successfully apprehended a young man from Rajasthan on Tuesday. The accused was allegedly involved in a sophisticated fraud scheme by creating and operating a fake social media account impersonating a senior police officer.
The Deception Unraveled: A Fake DIG Account
The investigation was triggered when authorities received credible information about fraudulent activities being conducted online. The central figure in this scheme was a counterfeit social media profile created in the name of Champaran range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harkishor Rai. This fake account was being used to allegedly cheat and deceive unsuspecting individuals, exploiting the trust and authority associated with the senior officer's position.
Swift Police Action and Arrest
Acting promptly on the tip-off, the Bettiah cyber police registered a formal case. Under the directives of the Superintendent of Police for West Champaran, a dedicated special team was formed to spearhead the investigation. This team operated under the leadership of the Senior Deputy Superintendent of Police (Cybercrime).
Through meticulous technical analysis and digital tracking, the police team pinpointed the location of the accused. The operation led them to Alwar district in Rajasthan, where the arrest was made. The accused was identified as Tasleem Khan, a 21-year-old resident of Kota Khurd village. This village falls under the jurisdiction of the Ramgarh police station in Rajasthan.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Following the arrest in Rajasthan, Tasleem Khan was brought back to Bettiah in Bihar to face legal proceedings. Cyber DSP Gautam Ommi provided details of the case, confirming the sequence of events. After completing all necessary legal formalities upon his arrival in Bettiah, the accused was remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail.
This arrest highlights the increasing vigilance of cyber police units in tackling online impersonation and fraud. It serves as a warning that creating fake profiles of government officials to commit crimes will lead to serious legal consequences.
