Thiruvananthapuram: Cyber police have registered a case in connection with an allegedly defamatory social media post targeting Rajya Sabha MP A A Rahim, officials confirmed on Monday.
Complaint Filed Against Facebook User
According to the police, the complaint was lodged against a Facebook account user identified as Sreekanth Palickathode. The accused are alleged to have created and circulated a fabricated social media post featuring Rahim’s photograph and attributing false claims to him.
False Claims About Operation Toofan
Police said the post falsely claimed that several individuals arrested under Operation Toofan, the statewide anti-narcotics drive, were members of CPM-affiliated organizations such as the Students' Federation of India (SFI). The allegedly fake post was widely shared across social media platforms, leading to the spread of misinformation and causing reputational damage to the Rajya Sabha member.
The complaint alleged that the content was deliberately designed to mislead the public and tarnish Rahim’s image by linking him and the organizations associated with him to persons arrested in drug-related cases.
Investigation Underway
Following a preliminary inquiry, cyber police registered a case and launched an investigation into the origin and circulation of the post.
