Dalit woman gang-rape accused arrested after shootout

Prayagraj: Three days after a Dalit woman was gang-raped, police arrested one of the accused following an exchange of fire in Pratapgarh on Tuesday. Two other accused are still at large.

Details of the Arrest

Cops seized a country-made pistol of 0.315 bore, along with four used and one live cartridge from the criminal identified as Sohail (22), a resident of Dilippur. Sohail, along with his two accomplices, is accused of gang-raping a Dalit woman three days ago.

How the Arrest Happened

Police said a joint team of Antoo police was conducting routine checks near Lohangpur village forest area when the cops noticed a suspicious man. The cops signalled him to stop, but he tried to escape. When the police team surrounded him, he opened fire. In retaliation, he was injured.

The injured accused has been taken to a hospital for treatment. Police are continuing their search for the two remaining suspects.
