A disturbing video has surfaced from Sorakhi village in Hansi district, Hisar, purportedly showing a Dalit youth being subjected to vigilante-style punishment over a suspicion of theft. The footage has triggered outrage in the region and has been widely shared on social media. However, local police have stated that they have not yet received any formal complaint regarding the incident.
Details of the Incident
The victim was accused of stealing a water pump and selling it to a scrap dealer. In the video, villagers are seen tying the youth with ropes, hanging him upside down inside a well, and assaulting him to force a confession. The youth is heard screaming and pleading to be pulled out as he is lowered headfirst into the water-filled well. The attackers continue lowering him deeper for nearly a minute until he appears to agree to provide information about the alleged theft. After being pulled out, he is thrashed with sticks. The video also shows attempts to further restrain him with ropes.
Police Response
Bass police station SHO Inspector Pavitra and SI Praveen Kumar, who is in charge of the Sorakhi outpost, confirmed that neither the youth nor any villagers have approached the police regarding the matter. A police officer stated, 'We have not received any complaint, nor has any accused person been handed over to police. Appropriate action will be taken if a complaint is received or if the matter is verified during inquiry.'
The incident has raised concerns about the prevalence of vigilante justice in rural areas and the lack of timely police intervention. Authorities have urged the public to report such incidents to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands.
