Daltonganj Man Arrested for Extortion Over Disputed Land, Demanded Rs 1.2 Crore
In a significant development in Daltonganj, a 31-year-old man has been arrested by the police for allegedly making extortion calls and demanding a hefty sum of Rs 1.2 crore over a disputed plot of land. The incident, which came to light on Wednesday, highlights ongoing tensions in the city's Housing Colony area.
Details of the Extortion Case
The accused, identified as J P Shukla, targeted Nand Kumar Yadav, a resident of the Housing Colony, with repeated extortion calls. According to police reports, the dispute centers around 64 decimals of prime land within the colony, which is currently under contention. Shukla, who also resides in the same colony, leveraged this land issue to make his demands.
Officers from the Town police station acted swiftly after Yadav filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Shukla. The arrest was made on Tuesday, and police have since seized two mobile phones belonging to Shukla, which were allegedly used to make the extortion calls. On Wednesday, Shukla was forwarded to judicial custody, marking a key step in the legal process.
Criminal History of the Accused
Jyoti Lal Rajwar, the officer-in-charge of the Town police station, provided further insights into Shukla's background. "He is a violator of the Arms Act and has been sent to jail on multiple occasions," Rajwar stated. Police records reveal that Shukla has a troubling criminal history, with five cases registered against him in Ranchi, Garhwa, and Palamu districts since 2014.
Notably, Shukla was previously accused in a firing incident targeting a deputy superintendent of police in Ranchi. This pattern of alleged criminal activity underscores the seriousness of the current extortion charges and raises concerns about public safety in the region.
Implications and Police Response
The arrest has drawn attention to land disputes in urban areas like Daltonganj, where such conflicts can escalate into criminal acts. Police have emphasized their commitment to tackling extortion and related offenses, urging residents to report similar incidents promptly. The seizure of evidence, including mobile phones, is expected to play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
As the case progresses, authorities are likely to delve deeper into Shukla's alleged connections and the broader implications for land dispute resolutions in the city. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing complex criminal networks and protecting citizens from harassment.
