Building Collapse in Rohini Leaves Several Feared Trapped
An under-construction building collapsed in Delhi's Rohini area on Wednesday, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, prompting immediate response from local authorities and rescue teams.
Details of the Incident
The building, located in Sector 11 of Rohini, was in the final stages of construction when it suddenly gave way. According to officials, the structure was a four-storey building that collapsed like a pack of cards. Neighbors reported hearing a loud noise around 6:30 AM, followed by a massive cloud of dust.
Police and fire brigade teams reached the spot within minutes. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been deployed for search and rescue operations. A senior police officer stated, "We have received reports that several workers were inside the building at the time of the collapse. Efforts are underway to locate and rescue them."
Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue teams are using heavy machinery to clear the debris and reach any survivors. As of now, at least three people have been rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable. However, officials fear that many more may still be trapped.
The exact number of people trapped is not yet known. Local residents estimate that around 15 to 20 workers were on-site during the collapse. The building was being constructed by a private developer, and an investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the collapse.
Previous Incidents and Safety Concerns
This is not the first such incident in Delhi. In recent years, there have been multiple building collapses in the city, raising concerns about construction safety and regulation enforcement. In 2025, a similar collapse in East Delhi killed four people. Activists have called for stricter oversight of construction projects, especially in rapidly developing areas like Rohini.
A local resident commented, "We have been complaining about the quality of construction in this area for months. The authorities never paid attention. Now, lives are at stake."
Government Response
The Delhi government has announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the families of those who lose their lives in the incident. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) said, "We are doing everything possible to rescue the trapped individuals. A thorough investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those responsible."
Meanwhile, the construction site has been sealed, and the developer has been detained for questioning.
