Four Individuals Apprehended in Elaborate Delhi Cryptocurrency Robbery Scheme
In a significant crackdown, Delhi Police has arrested four people for allegedly orchestrating a sophisticated robbery under the guise of selling cryptocurrency in northwest Delhi's Subhash Place area. The accused have been identified as Anish Khan (60), Saud Alam (46), Mohammad Harun (55), and Abdul Kadir (40). This incident highlights a growing trend of digital currency-related crimes in urban centers.
Modus Operandi: A Deceptive Trap with Police Impersonation
The criminal operation began with the accused posting fraudulent advertisements on various social media platforms, falsely claiming to sell USDT (Tether), a cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar. Potential buyers who contacted them were lured to a predetermined location under the assurance that the cryptocurrency would be transferred immediately upon cash payment.
In a particularly audacious twist, after the victim handed over the cash to one of the accomplices, two other individuals arrived on a motorcycle dressed in khaki uniforms, impersonating police officers. They pretended to detain the accomplice holding the money, citing illegal activity, and claimed he would be taken to the police station. In the ensuing confusion, they fled with the cash, leaving the victim bewildered and robbed.
Police Investigation and Swift Action
The case came to light on February 24 when a 53-year-old man reported the incident to the authorities. Additional Commissioner of Police (North West) Bhisham Singh promptly formed a specialized investigation team led by Station House Officer Tej Pal Singh. Through meticulous analysis of CCTV footage from the area, police first apprehended Anish Khan. His accomplices were subsequently arrested from Netaji Subhash Place while they were allegedly planning another similar scam.
During the arrests, police recovered Rs 15,000 in cash and seized two motorcycles used in the commission of the crime. The accused revealed during interrogation that they were part of an interstate criminal syndicate, with two Mumbai-based accomplices and a Delhi-based conspirator currently absconding. Efforts are underway to track down these remaining individuals.
Broader Implications and Public Advisory
This case underscores the vulnerabilities in cryptocurrency transactions, especially when conducted through informal channels. Authorities emphasize the importance of verifying the legitimacy of digital currency sellers and conducting transactions through secure, regulated platforms. The use of police impersonation adds a dangerous dimension to such crimes, eroding public trust in law enforcement.
Delhi Police has issued advisories urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when responding to online advertisements for cryptocurrency sales and to report any suspicious activities immediately. The investigation continues as police work to dismantle the entire network involved in this interstate syndicate.
