Delhi Fire Tragedy: Five of a Family Charred to Death in Shahdara
Delhi Fire: Five Family Members Die in Shahdara Blaze

A tragic fire in New Delhi's Shahdara area has claimed the lives of five members of a family, including an 18-month-old child. The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a residential building, leaving the community in shock.

The Victims

The deceased have been identified as Nishank Jain (35), his wife Aanchal (33), their son Akaay (18 months), and Nishank's parents Arvind (60) and Anita (58). They were visiting the building to celebrate the birthday of Nishank's nephew, five-year-old Anant, at a resort in Manesar. The family had planned to join the celebration the next day.

Desperate Calls for Help

According to family members, around 3:45 am, as flames spread rapidly, Nishank made frantic calls to his elder brother Deepak, crying, "Bhaiya, bacha lo" (Brother, save me). The calls ended abruptly. Deepak then contacted their driver, Karamvir Singh, to check on them, but by then it was too late.

Building Hazards

Residents pointed to multiple safety hazards that may have worsened the situation. The entire backside of the building had been sealed with iron grills, with no staircase or opening for escape. The building houses eight families, with an 800 sq yard plot split into two 400 sq yard flats on each floor. The structure comprises stilt parking and four floors, each divided into multiple flats.

Fire Cause and Response

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) RP Meena said the fire is suspected to have started due to a malfunctioning air-conditioner on the second floor. Residents alleged a delay in response, claiming the fire started around 3:13 am. Several calls were made to the Delhi Fire Service, but the number turned out to be invalid. A senior fire official said they received the first call around 3:47 am and teams were dispatched immediately.

Family's Grief

Nishank, a chartered accountant with a firm in Connaught Place, and Aanchal, an employee at a public sector bank, had waited eight years for a child. Akaay's birth had brought immense joy to the family. "They had been waiting for the baby for so long. It is all gone in an instant," said Pritesh, Nishank's brother-in-law. Locals said Akaay was found holding onto the charred remains of one of his parents.

Investigation Underway

Police have filed an FIR and, along with the fire and electricity departments, are investigating the incident. The tragedy highlights the critical need for proper fire safety measures and emergency exits in residential buildings.
