The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear on Friday a petition filed by Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), challenging the government's decision to block the satirical political group's account on the social media platform X.
Petition Details
The petition, listed for hearing before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, contends that the CJP account was arbitrarily suspended by the government on grounds of national security. The plea further alleges that the party's Instagram account, official website, and backup social media handles were also taken down as part of a broader crackdown against the movement.
Background of the Case
Abhijeet Dipke, who was previously associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), launched the Cockroach Janta Party amid a controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The controversy stems from comments made by the CJI during a May 15 hearing on a plea concerning senior designation for a lawyer, where he reportedly used the terms 'cockroaches' and 'parasites.'
The petitioner argues that the blocking of the CJP's social media presence is an infringement on the right to free speech and political satire. The case is expected to draw attention to the balance between national security concerns and freedom of expression in the digital space.
