Civil Rights Group Seeks Delhi High Court Intervention to Avert Communal Violence During Eid in Uttam Nagar

A civil rights organization has urgently approached the Delhi High Court to prevent what it describes as "imminent communal violence" during the upcoming Eid celebrations in Uttam Nagar, Delhi. This plea comes in the wake of a tragic incident on Holi, where a 26-year-old man was killed in a clash, heightening tensions in the area.

Urgent Hearing Requested Amid Fears of Serious Violence

Senior advocate Nitya Ramkrishnan mentioned the plea for an urgent listing before a bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia on Wednesday. She emphasized the fear of "serious violence" erupting on Eid, which is scheduled to be celebrated on March 20 or 21, 2026. The bench allowed the urgent hearing request from the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, although the petition did not come up during the day and is likely to be heard on Thursday.

The petition specifically seeks the high court's intervention to "prevent communal violence and frenzy being created in Uttamnagar, Dwarka, Delhi, affecting the fraternity." It urges the court to direct respondent authorities to fulfill their statutory and constitutional obligations in averting imminent communal violence, hate speech, and targeted discrimination against a particular community.

Background: Holi Clash and Escalating Tensions

The organization moved the court against the backdrop of a disturbing incident during Holi, when a man was allegedly beaten to death following a neighborhood altercation between two families from different religious communities in Uttam Nagar. Since that event, the plea states that numerous hate speeches have been delivered, explicitly targeting the Eid festival and advocating that Muslims in Uttam Nagar be prevented from celebrating it.

Furthermore, the petition highlights that such hate speech and incitement have not been confined to rhetoric alone. They have manifested in acts of violence, vandalism, arson, mob assaults, and forced economic shutdowns. Several Muslim-owned shops in the locality have remained closed due to fear of violence, and reports indicate that families have been compelled to temporarily leave their homes due to apprehension of targeted violence.

Call for Immediate Action to Uphold Law and Order

The civil rights group's plea underscores the urgent need for authorities to take proactive measures to maintain peace and prevent any escalation of communal strife. It calls for strict enforcement of laws against hate speech and violence to ensure the safety and security of all residents, particularly during the festive period.

As the situation remains tense, the Delhi High Court's upcoming hearing on Thursday is being closely watched. The outcome could have significant implications for communal harmony in the region, setting a precedent for how such sensitive issues are addressed legally and administratively.
