Delhi High Court Calls for Peaceful Resolution in Kapur Family Inheritance Battle
The Delhi High Court has made a heartfelt plea for reconciliation in the ongoing inheritance dispute surrounding the estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur. During a hearing on Tuesday, Justice Mini Pushkarna urged the family members to settle their differences amicably, describing the situation as "sorry" and cautioning that God's financial blessings should not transform into a curse.
Court's Direct Appeal for Mediation and Family Harmony
Justice Pushkarna specifically requested the legal representatives of Sunjay Kapur's mother Rani Kapur, his wife Priya Kapur, and his sister Mandhira Kapur Smith to collaborate on finding a resolution that protects everyone's interests. "Any chance of mediation? Dirty linen is being washed in court. God has blessed you with financial wealth," the court remarked during the proceedings.
The judge emphasized the importance of preserving family relationships, stating "All of you should try to respect relations ... Way forward is resolution in a peaceful manner. Blessing should not become a curse. Efforts need to be from both sides." This oral observation underscores the court's preference for an out-of-court settlement rather than prolonged litigation.
Background of the Legal Conflict and Allegations
The High Court was hearing a lawsuit filed by 80-year-old Rani Kapur against her daughter-in-law Priya Kapur and other defendants. The elderly matriarch seeks to have the "RK Family Trust" declared null and void, alleging it was established in October 2017 using "forged, fabricated and fraudulent" documents without her knowledge or consent.
Rani Kapur claims she has been wrongfully stripped of all her rights, assets, and legacy through what she describes as a "systematic fraud." According to her lawsuit, her late husband Surinder Kapur—promoter of the Sona Group of Companies—left her as the sole beneficiary of his entire estate. She alleges that through "a complex web of illegal transactions" involving Priya Kapur and others in collusion with her deceased son Sunjay Kapur, all her assets were transferred to the fraudulent RK Family Trust.
Significantly, the lawsuit states that Sunjay Kapur never confirmed to his mother that she had been divested of her rights nor provided her with a copy of the trust deed before his untimely death on June 12, 2025, from a sudden cardiac arrest during a polo match in England.
Court's Observations on Fair Distribution and Legal Proceedings
During the hearing, Justice Pushkarna made a pointed observation directed at Priya Kapur, noting that it was Rani Kapur's husband who "founded everything" and that the fruits of his labor should be shared by all family members. This comment highlights the court's concern for equitable distribution of the family wealth.
The High Court has issued formal notices on multiple applications:
- Notice to Rani Kapur regarding Priya Kapur's application seeking rejection of the lawsuit
- Notice to Priya Kapur and other defendants concerning Rani Kapur's application to halt dividend disbursals from a company to the daughter-in-law and to preserve the estate
Rani Kapur has requested the court to permanently restrain the defendants—including Priya Kapur and her grandchildren—from utilizing or acting on behalf of the RK Family Trust in any capacity. She maintains that despite the family dispute, she continues to receive over ₹21 lakh monthly, though she claims this represents only a fraction of what she is rightfully owed.
The case continues to unfold as the court encourages dialogue while simultaneously addressing the serious allegations of fraudulent asset transfer within one of India's prominent industrial families.
