The family resided in Zamrudpur.
Eyewitness Rajindra, a 58-year-old guard, described hearing a loud crash and rushing out to find a crowd of 20 to 25 people gathered around Das, who lay unconscious on the road. A nearby cardiologist attempted to revive him before he was rushed to a hospital via ambulance, where he was declared dead due to serious head injuries sustained from being flung three to four feet away upon impact.

Some friends of Das speculate the driver might have been a local, while others believe the car could have entered from outside to visit a dark spot in the neighborhood.
