Delhi Lieutenant Governor Directs Swift Action After Army Officer and Family Assaulted

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has expressed deep concern and taken immediate action following the assault of a serving Indian Army brigadier, his wife, and their son in the Vasant Enclave area. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar, has prompted the LG to personally intervene to ensure the victims' safety and a thorough investigation.

LG's Direct Intervention and Security Measures

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu publicly addressed the serious matter on social media platform X early Tuesday. "Deeply concerned by the incident in Vasant Enclave involving the assault on a serving brigadier of Indian Army, his wife and son, a 23-year-old IIT Delhi graduate," Sandhu posted. He revealed that he had personally spoken with the brigadier to inquire about the incident and their well-being.

The LG has issued clear directives to Delhi Police authorities, instructing Police Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police to ensure a comprehensive and swift investigation. "I have directed them to ensure a thorough and swift investigation, leading to immediate and appropriate action against those responsible," Sandhu emphasized in his statement.

Furthermore, Sandhu has ordered Delhi Police to provide full security to the Army officer and his family members. "We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens and upholding the rule of law," the Lieutenant Governor affirmed, underscoring the administration's dedication to public safety and justice.

Details of the Assault Incident and Police Response

The assault occurred when the 52-year-old Army officer and his son objected to a group of men drinking inside a parked car near their residence in Vasant Vihar. Following their objection, both the officer and his son were allegedly assaulted by the group, resulting in injuries to both individuals.

The family has raised serious allegations against Delhi Police, claiming initial inaction at the scene of the incident and subsequent harassment. In response to these concerns, police authorities have conducted a preliminary inquiry that identified lapses on the part of the investigating inspector. The officer has since been transferred to district lines as a disciplinary measure.

An official First Information Report has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and other relevant sections of the law.

Arrests Made and Investigation Progress

In a positive development, Delhi Police have apprehended two key suspects allegedly seen in the vehicle involved in the incident. The police have also seized the vehicle as part of their investigation. Lieutenant Governor Sandhu acknowledged this progress in a subsequent social media post in the evening, describing it as "much needed swift action" by the police force.

"With two key accused now apprehended and the vehicle seized, the investigation must be fast-tracked to ensure all accomplices are brought to justice," Sandhu stated, maintaining pressure on authorities to complete the investigation thoroughly and expediently.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the victim's status as a serving Army officer and the involvement of his family, including his IIT Delhi graduate son. The Lieutenant Governor's direct intervention highlights the seriousness with which the administration is treating this assault case and its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims while maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
