New Delhi: A 40-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by a relative in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Wednesday morning, police said. The deceased was identified as Hridesh Mishra, a resident of Sangam Vihar who worked as a driver. Police suspect the shooter, a relative, acted due to a personal dispute.
According to police, around 5 am, Mishra was allegedly attacked by a man living in the same area. Four to five rounds were fired, one of which struck him in the head, killing him instantly. A resident who witnessed the incident said the two men were initially standing together when the firing began.
“The incident happened around 5 am. I saw both of them standing there when one of them suddenly opened fire. After being shot, Hridesh ran a few metres before collapsing. We informed the police, and they reached the spot within 25 minutes,” the resident said. The resident added that Mishra was known locally as a driver, but the motive behind the killing was unclear.
Another resident, Puneet, said Mishra was chased before being shot and alleged that four people were involved in the attack. Police are verifying the claims and examining CCTV footage from the area. Investigators suspect the shooter is Mishra’s neighbour and a distant relative. Police said both men were from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh and had been involved in a long-standing family feud.
“Both families have been embroiled in a dispute for several years. A case linked to the feud had already been registered in Uttar Pradesh,” an officer said. Police are also probing whether the murder is connected to an earlier killing in the family. According to investigators, about 10 months ago, a relative of the suspected shooter was murdered, and there were suspicions that people known to Mishra may have been involved.
“We are looking into the possibility that this murder was carried out in retaliation. However, other angles are also being explored,” another officer said. A murder case has been registered, and teams have been formed to trace the suspect. Police said raids are being conducted at multiple locations.
