NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the culpable homicide section and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the deadly fire incident in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area, which claimed at least 21 lives. The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the national capital.
Police Personnel Hospitalized After Rescue Operations
Ten Delhi Police personnel, including five head constables and five constables, have been admitted to hospital after participating in rescue operations. According to police, they were the first responders to enter the premises and are currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the operation. Their bravery in rushing to the scene has been commended by senior officials.
Fire Services Response
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) reported that it received a call regarding the blaze at 9:45 am and immediately dispatched multiple fire tenders to the spot. Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Hotel Identified as Flourish Stays
According to Delhi Police, the restaurant where the fire broke out has been identified as Hotel Flourish Stays, located in the bustling Malviya Nagar area. The owner of the hotel has been identified as Lokesh Bajaj. Sources indicate that three partners are involved in operating the hotel, and it is also reported that the partners own several other hotels and guest houses in Delhi. Authorities are now scrutinizing their business operations.
Investigation Underway
Delhi Police stated that investigators and other agencies are examining various aspects related to the hotel's ownership, operations, and safety standards as part of the ongoing probe. The focus is on whether the building had the necessary fire safety clearances and whether any negligence contributed to the high death toll. Forensic teams are also at the site to gather evidence.
Prime Minister Modi Expresses Grief and Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims and their families. In a post on social media, the Prime Minister's Office said: "The loss of lives due to a fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi is tragic. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected."
The PMO also announced ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF). An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured would receive Rs 50,000. The announcement has brought some relief to the affected families.
Ongoing Probe
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the fire and whether any lapses contributed to the tragedy. Police are questioning the hotel staff and owners, and examining records to ascertain if the building complied with safety norms. The incident has once again raised questions about fire safety standards in the capital.
