Delhi Traffic Police Launches Major Drive to Decongest Airport Roads
In a significant move to address chronic traffic bottlenecks, Delhi Traffic Police has executed a targeted enforcement operation near the domestic terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport. This initiative aims to alleviate the severe congestion that has long plagued commuters, particularly in the Mehram Nagar vicinity, where roadside vendors, parked vehicles, and encroachments have consistently impeded vehicular movement.
Coordinated Action Targets Illegal Activities
The special drive was conducted this week as a collaborative effort involving the Delhi Traffic Police, airport operator GMR Group, and local residents from Mehram Nagar village. Authorities focused on eliminating unauthorized hawkers, rehris, and other encroachments that were occupying carriageways and pavements, thereby restricting the flow of traffic. Additionally, vehicles parked in violation of traffic regulations were systematically cleared to restore order and efficiency to the area.
Substantial Enforcement Results Achieved
Over the course of five enforcement drives, the traffic police issued an impressive 331 e-challans to offenders. The operation also led to 89 vehicles being booked under the Violation of Carriage Act provisions, and 63 vehicles were towed away due to illegal parking. Furthermore, 9 roadside rehris were removed during the action, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the cleanup effort.
Leadership and Future Plans
The ground operation was spearheaded by Traffic Inspector Devender Tomar, who worked alongside dedicated traffic staff deployed in the airport area. Delhi Traffic Police officials have emphasized that such coordinated drives will continue not only in the airport vicinity but also at other critical locations across the city. The goal is to maintain roads free from encroachments and illegal parking, thereby enhancing traffic flow, safety, and overall convenience for all commuters.
This proactive measure underscores the commitment of Delhi authorities to tackle urban congestion and improve infrastructure, ensuring a smoother travel experience for those accessing the airport and surrounding areas.
