Delivery Agent Takes Desperate Action in Greater Noida Tragedy
A delivery agent showed extraordinary courage in Greater Noida early Saturday morning. He jumped into a deep water-filled pit at a construction site in a desperate attempt to save a young software engineer trapped in his car.
Late Night Accident in Sector 150
The incident occurred around 12:15 am near Sector 150. A 27-year-old software engineer named Mehta was driving home when his car plunged into a pit dug for the basement of an under-construction building. The pit was filled with water, creating a dangerous situation.
Delivery agent Moninder arrived at the scene around 1:45 am. He found rescue workers already present but facing significant challenges. "I saw them struggling," Moninder told reporters. "The water was cold, visibility was poor, and there were exposed iron rods everywhere."
Personal Intervention Amid Rescue Difficulties
Moninder said rescue personnel appeared hesitant to enter the pit due to the hazardous conditions. Without waiting for official permission, he took matters into his own hands.
"I tied a rope around my waist and went into the water myself," the delivery agent explained. "I searched for the youth and his car for about thirty minutes."
According to Moninder, Mehta was initially visible standing on the roof of his submerged car. The young engineer used his mobile phone torch to signal for help and plead with passers-by.
Father's Heartbreaking Account
Raj Kumar Mehta, the victim's father, recounted his final conversations with his son. "I spoke to him shortly before the accident," the grieving father said. "He told me he was on his way home."
A little later, Mehta called again in panic. "He said his car had met with an accident and fallen into a drain," Raj Kumar Mehta recalled. "He asked me to come immediately."
The father rushed to the spot but faced the same visibility problems as rescuers. "When I called him, he opened the torchlight of his phone inside the car," he said. "We could see a faint little light from the water body, but it was so difficult for anybody to get inside."
Police Response and Official Position
Police authorities dismissed claims of negligence in the rescue operation. Additional Commissioner of Police Rajeev Narayan Mishra stated that both police and fire teams responded promptly.
"We deployed a crane, ladder, makeshift boat, and searchlights to save the youth," Mishra explained. "Visibility was nearly zero due to fog, which complicated rescue efforts."
The search operation lasted over five hours. The body was finally recovered on Saturday morning with assistance from multiple agencies:
- Fire department
- State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
- Local police teams
Contrasting Perspectives on the Tragedy
Moninder believes earlier intervention could have saved the young engineer's life. "I was later told that if help had reached ten minutes earlier, the techie could have been saved," he said.
The delivery agent also revealed this wasn't the first accident at this location. "The same ditch had previously been the site of another accident," he noted. "Locals rescued a truck driver using ropes and a ladder."
Raj Kumar Mehta demanded accountability for his son's death. "This incident resulted from negligence at the site," the father asserted. "If expert divers had been deployed earlier, my son might have been saved."
The tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns at construction sites in developing urban areas. It also showcases the bravery of ordinary citizens like Moninder, who risked his own safety in an attempt to save another life.
