Mother Accuses Man of Kidnapping and Forcibly Marrying Her Daughter in Dharwad
A woman from Kelageri in Dharwad district has formally approached City Police Commissioner N Shashikumar, alleging that her 22-year-old married daughter was kidnapped two years ago and subsequently forced into marriage by a married Muslim man. The case has sparked concerns and drawn attention from local activists.
Details of the Alleged Kidnapping
In a detailed memorandum submitted to the police, the mother explained that her daughter, though legally married to another individual, was residing at her parental home at the time of the incident. She stated, "A person named Munna was working as a car driver in a neighbouring house and was visiting our house frequently. When I was not at home in 2023, he lured my daughter and took her somewhere." This event marked the beginning of a distressing two-year ordeal for the family.
Police Complaint and 'Love Jihad' Allegations
The woman reported that she immediately lodged a formal complaint at the Dharwad Sub-Urban police station following her daughter's disappearance. However, authorities only registered a missing person case, which she believes did not adequately address the severity of the situation. Expressing her fears, she added, "I fear that she has become a victim of Love Jihad. I have learnt that Munna was married to a Muslim woman from Ramadurga and they have two children. Now I am unaware of their whereabouts." The term 'Love Jihad' is often used in certain contexts to allege forced religious conversions through marriage.
Appeal to Police Commissioner and Response
Determined to seek justice, the mother, accompanied by some Hindu activists, personally met with Police Commissioner N Shashikumar to urge for a thorough investigation and trace her daughter. Commissioner Shashikumar has acknowledged the appeal and assured that he will review the case file meticulously. He stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings, emphasizing the police's commitment to addressing such serious allegations.
The case highlights ongoing tensions and legal challenges surrounding interfaith marriages and kidnapping allegations in the region. Authorities are now tasked with investigating the claims to determine the facts and ensure the safety and rights of all individuals involved.
